A minimum of 64 individuals lost their lives in a security raid against the organized crime group in the Brazilian city's north zone - the biggest and most lethal operation in the area's history.

Four security agents were among those killed during the security mission in the Alemão and Penha districts, local authorities reported. In excess of 80 individuals were detained.

Intense confrontations commenced when around 2,500 law enforcement officers initiated the operation on Tuesday morning. The Comando Vermelho reacted using gunfire, igniting obstacles and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, officials stated.

The UN Human Rights Office expressed being "appalled" by the law enforcement raid, calling for "immediate and thorough inquiries".

Operation Impact

The slum neighborhoods near the aerial transportation hub is regarded as the central command of a major organised crime groups.

State officials stated a minimum of 50 of the fatalities were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".

Dozens of people were wounded, including non-combatants affected by the violence.

Local Reaction

Residents have compared the hillside area - home to about 300,000 people - to a "war zone" since the mission commenced.

Access ways continue shut throughout the region.

Criminal Expansion

The Red Command group has been increasing their influence in the area, expanding narcotics distribution networks and power in the informal settlements.

Rio's police reported in excess of 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were seized in the mission, in addition to numerous weapons.

Mission Context

The joint operation by various security forces was preceded by a year-long investigation.

Many of the individuals are thought to be affiliates of a group from the northern region who are currently hiding in Rio de Janeiro.
